A Splash of Colour Exhibition Celebrates Creativity and Connection

This summer, North Tyneside Learning Trust hosted a special exhibition celebrating A Splash of Colour Intergenerational,  a heart-warming project connecting school children with older residents across North Tyneside Living schemes.

The exhibition showcased the vibrant, collaborative artworks created by pupils and residents from eight schools and retirement schemes over the past academic year. Each piece told a unique story, reflecting shared conversations, memories, and ideas between generations.

“At first I was a bit reluctant… but I am SO pleased that I did,” said Jack, a resident at Eccles Grange.

For the children, the project opened new perspectives and friendships. “I’ve really enjoyed coming to Spring View and learning about how my new friend was born during the War,” shared Freddie from Wallsend Jubilee Primary School.

Across the participating schools and schemes, pupils and residents met to share experiences and create artwork that now brightens the walls of each scheme. The exhibition brought all these pieces together in one colourful, inspiring space.

“It brought out the artistic talent of the residents, which we never knew we had,” said Bob, from Percy Lodge. One pupil, Yannis, added: “Making art was the best time I’ve had in my life.”

Teachers also praised the initiative. A teacher from Battle Hill Primary School commented: “It was lovely to see the children interact so naturally and seamlessly with the residents.”

As Gill Hall, Housing Officer at Rosebank Hall, summed up beautifully: “We had laughter, smiles and joyful moments… we have memories to last a lifetime!”
