School Partners

Schools are at the heart of everything we do at the Trust. We work with schools across North Tyneside, spanning all ages, phases and types. Schools engage with the Trust in different ways, depending on their context and needs. The information below explains the main partnership models and how they work in practice.

What is a Foundation
Trust School?

A Foundation Trust School is a school that works with the local authority and is supported by a charitable trust.

The Trust appoints some governors and helps the school build long term relationships with external partners, while the school remains part of the local authority family of schools.

How Foundation Trust Schools operate

Foundation Trust Schools operate within the same statutory framework as other local authority schools. This means they:

  • Teach the National Curriculum
  • Follow the Schools Admissions Code
  • Are inspected by Ofsted
  • Employ teaching staff under national pay and conditions
  • Are funded by the local authority
  • Remain subject to local authority intervention if concerns arise
Schools continue to be publicly funded and accountable.

The role of the Trust

The charitable Trust (North Tyneside Learning Trust) establishes a long term relationship with the school. Its role is to:

  • Appoint some members of the governing body
  • Build partnerships with external organisations
  • Support the school’s leadership, ethos and strategic direction
The Trust brings additional skills, experience and connections that strengthen governance and support the school’s development.
As a Foundation Trust School:
  • The governing body acts as the employer
  • The school is its own admissions authority
  • Land, buildings and assets are held by the Trust rather than the local authority

What is a Partner School?

A Partner School is a school that works in partnership with North Tyneside Learning Trust to access support, expertise and opportunities that benefit children and young people, school staff and governors.

Partner Schools choose to be part of the Trust’s partnership network and engage with its work through an annual partnership agreement. This partnership focuses on collaboration, support and shared learning.

How Partner Schools work with the Trust

Partner Schools pay an annual partnership fee and, in return, are able to access a wide range of Trust led support and services. This partnership is flexible and collaborative.

Support available to Partner Schools may include:
  • Access to Trust programmes and projects
  • Professional learning and development opportunities for staff
  • Networking and collaboration with other schools
  • Opportunities to engage with external partners
  • Strategic support linked to priorities identified by the school

The role of the Trust

For Partner Schools, the Trust’s role is to:
  • Provide support, expertise and opportunities that add value beyond statutory provision
  • Facilitate collaboration between schools and partners
  • Support school leaders, staff and governors
  • Respond to local need and emerging priorities
The Trust does not take on responsibility for the governance of Partner Schools through this partnership arrangement.

  • Partner Schools
  • Foundation Partner Schools, combining both approaches
