A Splash of Colour Intergenerational brings together children and young people from local schools with residents living in North Tyneside Living retirement schemes. Since launching in April 2024, the project has created opportunities for meaningful connection across generations, using creativity as a shared starting point.
What happens
Sessions take place within the retirement schemes, where pupils visit residents in their own environment. Each session begins with time spent talking and getting to know one another, sharing stories about school, work, family life and experiences from the past.
These conversations are then brought to life through art. Pupils and residents create individual pieces inspired by what they have learned about each other, with the artwork displayed in communal spaces across the schemes.
Since the project began, 15 schools and schemes have taken part, involving over 300 children and young people and over 100 residents.
The difference it makes
The project has had a clear impact on both the children and the residents involved.
For residents, the sessions provided a valuable opportunity for connection and conversation.

For pupils, the experience supported both communication skills and confidence, while also helping them better understand different life experiences.

Beyond the data, the sessions created a genuine sense of shared experience, with relationships forming quickly and naturally through conversation and creativity.
