A Splash of Colour Intergenerational

When we were approached earlier this year by friends from North Tyneside Council to work on a new idea, bringing together residents from NTC housing schemes and children from NTLT schools we didn’t realise just how joyous and impactful the project would be.

A Splash of Colour Intergenerational has brought together children and residents, encouraging them to share their ideas and experiences and create beautiful, fun art which will adorn the walls of the residences.

The first two residences to take part in the project have been Rosebank Hall and Percy Lodge, which were paired with Burnside College and Percy Main Primary School respectively. Over the course of 3-4 weeks, children and young people visited residents in the schemes and spent time getting to know them and learn more about their lives and their interests before getting creative. Mavis and Anna worked with Ron at Rosebank Hall and their conversations inspired the work they created:

“Ronald talked a lot about his youth and living in a community where neighbours were close and friendly. He was friends with the kids that lived nearby. He spent his days playing in the local area and spoke fondly of his childhood spending his time outdoors throughout Wallsend.”

To celebrate the work created each of the residences has held a grand unveiling, inviting guests from North Tyneside Council, North Tyneside Learning Trust and the schools. Special guests also included friends from Morgan Sindall Property Services, and Solutions for North Tyneside (S4NT) who have very kindly sponsored this project.

During the unveiling at Percy Lodge, Bob, one of the residents who took part, talked warmly about ‘their friends at Percy Main Primary School”, whilst one of the children reflected on her favourite part of the project being ‘learning about John’s miner’s lamp.”

The project will be continuing in 2024/25 where we hope lots more friendship are created across the generations.
