We support Schools of Sanctuary by providing opportunities and resources that help schools build inclusive, welcoming environments.
Schools of Sanctuary
in North Tyneside
North Tyneside Learning Trust leads and supports the Schools of Sanctuary programme across North Tyneside. We hold the local licence to deliver the award and work in partnership with the refugee charity Walking With (Wallsend) to support schools through the process.
We have been delivering the programme since September 2022. To date, 14 schools have achieved Schools of Sanctuary status.
Schools of Sanctuary is about creating welcoming, inclusive school communities where children and young people learn about migration, asylum and belonging and where pupils and families seeking sanctuary feel safe, supported and valued.
Why become a School of Sanctuary?
- raise awareness of forced displacement and migration
- support newly arrived pupils and families seeking sanctuary
- build a culture of compassion, understanding and welcome
- ensure education provision meets the needs of new arrivals
What does it mean to be a School of Sanctuary?
- review and adapt their curriculum so that asylum and migration are meaningfully explored across key stages
- strengthen induction and welcome processes for new arrivals
- ensure staff and governors understand the asylum system, its impact on families, and the support available
- build links with local organisations supporting people seeking sanctuary
- run awareness raising, fundraising and community events
- work collaboratively with other Schools of Sanctuary
- establish pupil led Sanctuary Groups to guide and champion the work
Support for Schools
North Tyneside Learning Trust and Walking With support schools throughout the academic year, beginning in September and culminating in a celebration event in July. Schools that are interested in exploring the award are also encouraged to attend and understand what is involved.
Our wider commitment to City of Sanctuary
North Tyneside Learning Trust is a supporting organisation of City of Sanctuary. This reflects our commitment to the vision of the UK as a welcoming place of safety for people fleeing violence and persecution.
Through our Schools of Sanctuary work, we actively contribute to this national movement by embedding its values into school communities across North Tyneside.
