Information for Schools

Career Kits

The WOW project are developing some career kits which will provide sector specific information, activity tasks and practical resources which can be used within the curriculum.

For use with KS1 (ages 5-7) and KS2 (ages 7-11) curriculum, the kits will present children with a task and will ask the children to use numeracy, literacy, science, art and problem solving skills to tackle problems that arise within real work sectors. Each kit will come with resources, activity plans and teaching resources and will include a visit from the partner business in that sector.

Nexus career kit has been launched and is available on request from the WOW team.

Coming soon will be career kits from Sunderland Software City and First Face to Face.

Career Speed Dating

Involving between 10 and 15 business partners, the children have an opportunity to guess the job through a number of questions then find out more about the job role, the individual employer and the sector in a short 5 minute slot. Children are encouraged to explore the career paths of the career speed daters and the skills and knowledge they may need to develop to get into that career.

Typically a half day stand alone event with some preparation work around what is a career, what is a job and what the world of work entails would need to be undertaken by the school prior to the event.

Career Workshops

The WOW Project has delivered a number of workshop days where business partners run 1 hour workshops to a group of pupils around a specific job role or sector across the day. Pupils have the opportunity to find out more about the day to day tasks of a job role and have to use problem solving skills to explore the skills needed for the role.

Typically delivered as part of a whole learning day intervention.

Talk to the Professionals

The WOW Project has delivered a number of Talk to the Professionals events where children take part in a short interactive workshop with a volunteer from a job sector and are able to ask questions relating to the career path, job role, career opportunities of the professional.

Typically a 45 minute intervention which can be arranged as part of a workshop day initiative or a one off to enhance specific curriculum topics.

Preparation for Work

The WOW Project has delivered in partnership with Trust schools and 6th form colleges a wide range of opportunities with focus on preparation for work events. Events focusing on job application, preparing for interview, mock interview with employers and 6th form careers events are among a number of similar projects delivered by the project.
